Congressman Johnson’s statement on pilot program for a test-run of hand-marked paper ballots

Congressman Hank Johnson (GA-04) released the following statement after some Georgia lawmakers called this week for a rapid test-run of hand-marked paper ballots in this year’s elections, switching from touchscreens in some polling places.

“I support the Georgia Republican Party’s call for a pilot program for Georgia political subdivisions to conduct upcoming elections using hand-marked paper ballots,” said Rep. Hank Johnson (GA-04). “I have been concerned about the trustworthiness of electronic voting for many years, and in 2013 I first introduced federal legislation that dealt with the problem. Last year, a federal judge in Atlanta noted substantial concerns about administration, maintenance, and security deficiencies in Georgia’s electronic voting system. It’s time for Georgia elections to be conducted free from the substantial threat of undetectable electronic manipulation. Hand-marked paper ballots will eliminate that threat.”
